What Is Wrong With Sherwood?

Tim Sherwood is on the cuff of losing his job at Villa Park – Aston Villa are in a dire straight. Matt Lynch has decided to investigate further with a look at how Sherwood has failed as Villa boss and how the club is in a sorry state.

transfer dealings

This summer Tim Sherwood and the transfer team above him got many decisions wrong and it has led to an awful start to the season for the Villans. In total Villa made 13 signings over the course of the summer with the responsibility split between Sherwood and the Head of Recruitment and Director of Football. With so many signings, you would expect teething problems and there has been plenty. But Sherwood is the manager and should be able to get the best out of the players he has. In his press conference today he said that his squad isn’t good enough. It is a weak excuse when so much money was spent over the summer. Whether it was a net spend or not.

Benteke and Delph may have left a massive hole in the Villa side, but surely the club expected this? The issue should have been dealt with by him and the club’s management. Paddy Reilly and Hendrik Almstadt are making a royal mess of the Villa transfer budget, the money ball tactic has never been proven to work. It is far too hit and miss and not what Aston Villa need.

Inexperience Shows

Tim Sherwood did not have much managerial experience when he took over from Paul Lambert back in February and it seemingly didn’t play a part as he led Villa to Premier League safety and the FA Cup final. This season the inexperience has shown through with Sherwood’s tactics proving to be wrong on multiple occasions.

The Villans were in control against Leicester City and winning, but Sherwood opted to bring on another striker when really the game should have been closed out. The decision baffled many as Villa lost 3-2. The decisions made by Tim have come under increasing scrutiny – Libor Kozak was arguably Villa’s best player in pre-season yet he has seemingly been frozen out of the first-team.

Final word

Relegation looms – this is the grim reality of the situation the football club is in. Tim Sherwood is not looking capable of lifting a squad that is deflated. Tim was once the motivator to Villa’s renaissance last season – now he is certainly not the motivator. David Moyes has been mooted as a potential replacement. I welcome such a move if Sherwood is relieved of his duties.
