Ex-boss McLeish criticises Villa’s transfer policy

Former-Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish has claimed that the club’s disastrous season is mainly down to owner Randy Lerner’s rash decisions regarding the club. The Mirror report.

McLeish, who spent just one season, accused Lerner of not giving managers enough time at the club to properly settle and gel the team, as well as criticising the standard of transfer recruitment at the club.

Villa currently sit at the foot of the table, 11 points adrift of an escape from the relegation zone and in treacherous form. Matters were made worse after their underwhelming FA Cup draw away at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, as a huge backlash from the fans to the Villa players and manager Remi Garde took place.

Although the fans’ actions were unforgivable and way over the top, the tension and atmosphere around Villa Park this season has been undeniably bleak, with the club facing the serious possibility of relegation.

It is frightening to say the least that this is the position Villa are in. While they stayed in the league for the last three or four years I thought it would have helped in terms of the financial stability of the club.

Sometimes you have to go a step back to go two forwards but it has gone from bad to worse. That is what surprised me since I left, that it hasn’t gone forward. I would have thought the plan would have enabled them to have got better but it has been a complete struggle since.

However, despite Villa’s highly despairing situation, the 56-year-old Scotsman has claimed that a drop down to the Championship would enable a new breed of youngsters to emerge on to the scene and make an impression on the club.

Perhaps if Villa go down, and it looks likely, maybe it can be a new dawn of spawning any good youngsters they have coming through their academy.

Can Villa defy all odds and mount an incredible comeback in the second half of the season to secure their Premier League status or is it too little, too late for Remi Garde’s men?
