Four things we learned | Swansea City (A)

Four things we learned | Swansea City (A)

Villa succumbed to their sixth straight loss, as a Brad Guzan error allowed Swansea to claim all three points.

Here are four things we learned from the game against Swansea.

Guzan should be the first out of the door in the summer

It wasn’t too long ago that Guzan was pulling off fantastic saves and keeping us in games under Paul Lambert, but for the last two seasons he has been truly awful. Despite playing better than he has all season against Spurs last weekend, he reverted back to type against Swansea with a howler which allowed Swansea to score the only goal of the game. Far too many times this season, errors from Guzan have cost us games and valuable points and this is just another example of that.

In any normal circumstances he would be dropped, but when your only competition is Mark Bunn, he is likely to stay in the side. However, he should be one of the first to leave in the summer.

What does Westwood actually do?

It’s a question that has been asked many times, but what does Ashley Westwood actually do and what does he contribute to this Villa team? He doesn’t attempt to win the ball back and will often shy away from tackles, whilst he also rarely get’s involved in any attacks. He is another player, like Guzan, who should leave this summer.

There is no leadership

From the manager, to the captain and to the other 10 players out on the pitch. Our stand in ‘captain’ Joleon Lescott is not a leader, whilst our longest serving player, Agbonlahor, moans at his team-mates and does little else and our manager spends his time sitting on the bench rather than trying to encourage his team from the sidelines.

Idrissa Gueye is our best midfielder

It doesn’t take much to be considered Villa’s best midfielder, but Gueye is head and shoulders above the likes of Westwood and Veretout. Gueye was the only one of our midfield three with any drive or desire to win the ball back and harried the Swansea midfielders throughout the game.
