Garde: This is the end for our survival hopes

Remi Garde has said that “this is the end” for Villa’s survival hopes, after a Brad Guzan howler gifted Swansea all three points during a tightly fought encounter at the Liberty Stadium.

Villa put in an improved performance against the Swans and had numerous chances to go ahead in the first half, but were ultimately not able to do so.

Then from a free-kick in the second half, Swansea took the lead after Brad Guzan completely missed the ball after trying to punch the ball clear, which allowed Fernandez to bundle the ball into the back of the Villa net.

The result means that Villa have lost six consecutive games and are now 12 points from safety with only seven league games remaining.

Speaking after the game, to the BBC, Garde said:

“Once again it is frustrating to get nothing out of the game.

“That is something we could not afford in our situation and unfortunately, that is the end.”

However, Garde also praised his side for putting in an improved performance, as well as not being distracted by the changes in the board.

He said:

“We showed as a team that we were not too much affected by the board stuff.

“We have to concentrate on our business and that is football and that’s what we showed today.

“Today I’m quite pleased with the way that we played. When you’ve lost you’re not happy, but the character that the players showed today we have to do every game.”

Villa’s nightmare season only has seven games remaining, the next of which is against Chelsea, who are unbeaten in the league since Guus Hiddink took charge in December.
