Villa’s ninth consecutive defeat meant that relegation to the Championship was confirmed at Old Trafford, despite there still being four games of the season left.
With Villa needing an incredibly unlikely win to still have a chance of survival, Eric Black decided to pick the same defensive line-up that had lost at home against Bournemouth last week, apart from Alan Hutton replacing Jordan Lyden.
What followed at Old Trafford was 85 minutes of negativity from Villa, before substitute Rudy Gestede fired against the post when he probably should have scored.
However, United played out the remaining minutes with ease and condemned Villa to relegation for the first time since 1987.
