Lescott: We need to find a way of ending this current run

Joleon Lescott described the feeling in the Villa dressing room as ‘very subdued’ after Villa’s 1-0 loss against Manchester United confirmed Villa’s relegation to the Championship.

The defeat at Old Trafford is Villa’s ninth straight loss and sums up Villa’s season, with current manager Eric Black not having been able to turn the run of form around.

Speaking after the match to the BBC, stand in captain Lescott said:

Very subdued. We knew before the game what we had to do but coming to Old Trafford is never easy no matter what situation you’re in.

Throughout the game we showed a level of pride that there’s probably not been enough of throughout the season.

It’s about results so regardless of how we played in patches today we are relegated. We need to find a way to get out of this run of defeats.

Lescott was also of the opinion that, following the confirmation of Villa’s relegation after an awful season, the players may find it easier to put in performances that the fans can be proud of.

Now it’s confirmed maybe it’s a weight off the shoulders and we can give these fans what they deserve, some performances.

The former Manchester City defender was also aware of that players have given fans reason to criticize them this season and also said that he wants to stay at Villa next season and help to win promotion back to the Premier League.

Throughout the season we have given reasons for people to jump on us. It’s part of football, we have to take that on the chin. It’s a tough time at the minute. At the back of our minds is next season to get promoted. I’m here for as long as Aston Villa want me.

Villa have four games left to play in the Premier League before the season is over, with the next game coming against Southampton at home next Saturday.
