Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo looks set to become the next manager of Aston Villa after the incoming new owner Dr Tony Xia spoke about him in an interview with the Telegraph.
Di Matteo has been a firm favourite for the Villa job since the takeover was announced last Wednesday by the Midlands side, but by late last week, the prospect of having the Italian as manager were slim with the Champions League winner in talks with Serie A side Lazio about becoming their next boss.
On Monday, David Moyes ruled himself out of becoming the next Aston Villa boss leaving only Nigel Pearson and Di Matteo as the clear favourites for the job, but in the interview with the Telegraph Xia hinted that Dim Matteo could be next in charge saying:
That is maybe the reason that a lot of people say that I am favouring
It was said in regard to the point that Di Matteo would be good in China for raising Villa’s profile on the international stage as well as having Premier League experience. Xia said that Di Matteo was the strongest candidate for the vacant post.
Di Matteo last managed at Schalke between November 2014 and November 2015. He also managed at local rivals West Bromwich Albion before being sacked back in February 2011. He most famously won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2013.
