Stoke ask Villa to double their bid for Glenn Whelan

Stoke City have told Aston Villa they must pay around £1 million for Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan, according to a report in the Express and Star.

The Villans have already had a bid of £500,000 rejected by the Potters and have been told to stump up another £500,000 if they want to sign the midfielder.

Whelan has been a consistent player at the Bet365 Stadium,  making 291 appearances in total for Stoke.

Whelan has also been a key figure for the Republic of Ireland in the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign playing a deeper role for Martin O’Neill’s side.

This fee could put Steve Bruce off but with modern day football, this type od fee for a Premier League player is now normal.

The recent arrival of Darren Fletcher at Stoke puts Whelan at risk of being pushed out of regular first-team contention so a deal is likely to go through if Villa decide to pay the asking price.
