Aston Villa were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after losing 0-3 away to Bournemouth.
Despite several chances for Aston Villa, Unai Emery’s side were undone by strikes from Amine Adli, Lewis Cook and Alvaro Rodriguez. Bournemouth booked a quarter final spot with the win against Liverpool.
Despite the loss, Unai Emery has urged Aston Villa to move forward after their cup exit and turn attention to the challenges ahead.
Unai Emery admitted his side were disappointed to leave the competition but insisted there were positives to take from the performance.
Unai Emery explains where Villa fell short
The Villa boss felt his team competed in a similar way to their previous visits to Bournemouth but struggled to take their opportunities.
“We are disappointed,” Emery said after the game.
“Since I arrived at Aston Villa we’ve played here four times, and we have won, we have drawn, and today we lost, but we played the same match like we played before.
“Here, you must be compact, you must avoid the chances they were creating. We needed the ‘keeper, we needed the defence being compact, like we are building this team.
“And then when we were attacking, because we were creating chances even more than other times we were playing here, and we weren’t clinical today.”
Emery also highlighted the positives from the game, with Tyler, Marco Bizot and Goretzka featuring, while Alejandro Garnacho played 30 minutes.
“Move on, try to analyse and get positive things: Tyler playing, Marco Bizot playing, Goretzka playing, Garnacho as well having 30 minutes to play, getting confidence and understanding our structure, understanding our level and the difficulties in the Premier League with teams like Bournemouth.”
Aston Villa turn attention to Fulham
Emery defended his players’ efforts, despite the disappointment of the cup exit. Villa struggled with Bournemouth’s intensity early on and again after the break, eventually paying the price for failing to convert their chances.
“They were scoring and we were creating chances after it but not scoring. We are out of this competition, but we have a lot of challenges in front of us.”
Villa now have little time to dwell on the defeat, with Fulham next on the schedule in the Premier League before further commitments in Europe and the FA Cup.
Fulham also exited the cup after losing 0-1 at home to Crystal Palace.
“We have Fulham on Saturday, and Premier League is the priority. Then we have the Champions League and FA Cup.”
