Dean Smith confirms that he wants to bring a midfielder to Villa

In an interview with the Express and Star, Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has confirmed that he still wants to bring in a midfielder before the transfer window closes.

Having already spent upwards of £70 million this summer on the signings of Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, and Bertrand Traore, some may have expected the spending to be over at Villa Park.

However, Smith has confirmed he still hopes to sign an additional midfielder before the window closes on October 5th.

Having been linked with Chelsea duo Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek recently, Smith said:

Midfield is an area we’re looking at where we feel we lack numbers. There are many players who are speculated upon all the time and we are looking to add more to the squad.

Not content with simply adding numbers, the boyhood Villa man wants to add worthwhile quality to his ranks too:

We don’t want too many more because we don’t want to be stockpiling players but we want to add some quality where we can. It’s certainly an area we’re looking at.

Having made an impressive start after narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Smith will be optimistic about the upcoming campaign with his new recruits and perhaps with even more to come.

matchday.
