Aston Villa’s move for Johan Manzambi has reportedly been complicated by the club’s new front-of-shirt partnership with Visit Rwanda.
Unverified reports claim the midfielder’s representatives are unhappy with the agreement because of Manzambi’s family links to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Switzerland international was born to parents from Angola and DR Congo. Rwanda has faced international criticism over its alleged support for the M23 rebel group operating in eastern Congo, allegations the Rwandan government denies.
Reuters reports that Amnesty International has accused Rwanda of attempting to use Villa’s sponsorship as sportswashing, while also highlighting allegations surrounding the conflict in DR Congo.
Villa need clarity before Manzambi medical
Villa have already reached an agreement to sign Manzambi from Freiburg after moving ahead of Newcastle United.
ReadAstonVilla previously reported that personal terms had been settled and Villa had agreed a fee with Freiburg.
The latest claim suggests Manzambi’s camp were unaware that Villa were negotiating the Visit Rwanda deal before agreeing terms.
It is not yet clear whether the concern is serious enough to threaten the transfer. No recognised reporter has confirmed that Manzambi wants to withdraw from the agreement, while separate reports continue to suggest a medical is being arranged.
Villa’s partnership will place Visit Rwanda branding on the front of the men’s, women’s and academy shirts. Manzambi could potentially avoid separate sponsor events, but he would still be expected to wear the branding during matches.
Newcastle may continue monitoring the situation after previously agreeing a deal with Freiburg.
Villa remain favourites to complete the transfer. However, the club will need to address any concerns directly with Manzambi and his representatives before the deal is formally announced.
