Ezri Konsa has been outstanding for Aston Villa this season, so much so that he’s been linked with a move to Liverpool and been tipped for an England call-up. The 23-year-old looks to have a bright future for club and country and was lavished in praise by Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football.

Speaking about Villa’s 1-0 win over Leeds United, the Sky Sports pundit called Konsa “a brilliant defender” and says John Terry deserves a “pat on the back” for his work developing the centre-back since his arrival from Brentford in 2019.

In quotes reported by Birmingham Live, Carragher said: “Konsa, alongside Tyrone Mings, and the goalkeeper. That triangle I think will be huge for them. Konsa, a player who has made more blocks in the Premier League this season, (is) a brilliant defender.

“I think he has made a huge difference. I think as a partnership they have played together more than anyone else in the Premier League, so very consistent. I think this is a real pat on the back for the coaching team of Dean Smith and also John Terry.

“There’s no-one better for Konsa to work with than John Terry, one of the best we have seen, as a centre back.” Konsa has made 22 Premier League appearances this season, conceding 26 goals and helping to keep 11 clean sheets (Transfermarkt).

Ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League trip to face Sheffield United, Villa have shut out three of their last four top-flight opponents. They’ve gone three away games without conceding a single goal too, so Konsa’s influence alongside Mings is telling.

Carragher’s praise is more than warranted and now time will tell if Gareth Southgate shares his opinion.

All Konsa can do is keep impressing and hope the right people are watching him on a weekly basis. He’s been a regular at the heart of the Premier League’s third-best defence this season, so what more can he really do to get Southgate’s attention?
