On this day (April 28) in 2019, Leeds United and Aston Villa brawled at Elland Road after Leeds scored a controversial goal midway through the second half. Marcelo Bielsa allowed Villa to walk in an equaliser, but that caused another brawl as Pontus Jansson tried to stop them from scoring.
Jonathan Kodjia picked up an injury from a Liam Cooper challenge and stayed down while Leeds played on. Villa appealed for the ball to be put out and Tyler Roberts motioned as if he was going to do so, but he instead fed Mateusz Klich who cut inside and scored into the far corner.
Conor Hourihane instantly grabbed the goalscorer and Anwar El Ghazi was sent off for hitting out at Patrick Bamford, but replays showed there was no contact. Bielsa was diplomatic and let Villa score a leveller, but Jansson broke ranks and tried to stop Albert Adomah which led to his own teammates rowing as well as the Villa players.
The game finished 1-1, so Sheffield United sealed promotion to the Premier League while Leeds were resigned to a playoff place. The game will live long in the memory for the mass player brawl.
