Aston Villa have agreed a deal with Norwich City for Emiliano Buendia and could be breaking their transfer record to sign him for £33m, so Read Aston Villa looked at the last club-record signing and didn’t have to go far back to find him.
It was Ollie Watkins, signed for £30.6m from Brentford in the summer of 2020. The 25-year-old went on to make 40 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 16 goals with five assists. Watkins made three caps for England off the back of his Villa form too, so he’s been worth every penny.
Before Watkins, it was Wesley who was a club-record signing for £22.5m in the summer of 2019, so Buendia’s arrival would mean Villa have broken their transfer record for a third consecutive campaign. Wesley has made 25 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals with one assist.
Villa’s recruitment was on point last summer with Emiliano Martinez, Matty Cash, Bertrand Traore and Watkins impressing in their debut seasons, so fans should be excited about Buendia. Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris haven’t been shy about spending since their takeover of Villa and it doesn’t appear they’re finished.
