Morgan Sanson says he’s ‘back in the squad’ on Instagram ahead of Chelsea clash

Supporters must be dying to see Morgan Sanson this season. The 27-year-old had an injury-hit debut campaign at Aston Villa and has yet to make a first-team appearance in his second season due to his recovery, but he delivered some good news on Instagram that will be well received.

Sanson picked up a knee injury in April that caused him to miss the last nine Premier League games of 2020/21. The uncapped French midfielder missed Villa’s 3-2 defeat to Watford, 2-0 win over Newcastle United and 1-1 draw with Brentford this campaign too, but he should make the matchday squad against Chelsea.

Villa travel to Stamford Bridge to face the Champions League holders on Saturday evening and Sanson said he’s ‘back in the squad’. It’s unlikely he’ll start given his lack of match fitness, but he’s a great player to have on the bench. Douglas Luiz and John McGinn should get the nod over Sanson for now.

Since his 2021-move from Olympique Marseille, Sanson has gone on to make only nine appearances across the board, amassing less than 300 minutes of playing time. He’s not held down a starting place and was unlucky with injuries, so can Sanson finally prove his worth?
