Kevin Campbell praises Souttar ‘with a big future’ as Aston Villa are linked

Despite Aston Villa being overstocked at centre-back with Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Axel Tuanzebe, but the Midlands outfit have been linked with a move for Harry Souttar.

The 22-year-old joined Stoke City as a teenager in 2016 and has gone on to make 56 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals with three assists. Souttar is highly rated at the Britannia Stadium and Kevin Campbell can see why Villa are reportedly keen.

He told Football Insider: “I know Harry Souttar really well because of course he plays with my son (Tyrese Campbell) there. I think Harry would be happy to stay, 100 per cent he would be. It does not do him any harm having the likes of Aston Villa interested in him though. He’s a young player doing the business.

“If you are a top Championship club who are battling for promotion you expect the top-flight clubs to be looking. I’d have been surprised if Premier League clubs weren’t watching him. He’s made a huge difference at the back for Stoke. Harry is a very good young player with a big future ahead of him.”

Souttar has four years remaining on his deal at Stoke, so the Potters aren’t under any pressure to cash in. The lure of playing in the Premier League doesn’t really apply either as City are fourth in the table after 11 games, boasting four clean sheets.

They’ll fancy their chances of promotion, so Souttar could be in the top-flight next season regardless. The Australian international, who boasts six goals in nine games for his country at centre-back, is also on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, so Villa could have stiff competition.

Campbell clearly believes he has the potential to make the step up, but will Stoke be able to hold onto him?
