Philippe Coutinho enjoyed a bright start to life at Aston Villa after joining on loan from Barcelona, but he’s not made as much of an impact in recent weeks. The 29-year-old scored two goals and made two assists in his first three Premier League appearances for Villa, but he’s fired blanks in their last two games and the Midlands outfit are suffering for it.
Coutinho scored Villa’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United (January 15) and had a hand in all three of their goals in their 3-3 draw with Leeds United (February 9). Steven Gerrard’s men picked up five points from the Brazilian international’s first three games but have lost two on the bounce since he’s gone quiet.
Frank McAvennie believes Villa’s form will turn around when Coutinho is match fit. He called the 29-year-old a “great signing” and hailed Gerrard for bringing in exactly what the Midlands outfit needed last month – a cover goalkeeper (Robin Olsen), two defenders (Lucas Digne & Calum Chambers) and a playmaker (Philippe Coutinho).
Despite the poor form of late, McAvennie believes Villa will have a strong finish to the season as Coutinho will get better the more he plays. He told Football Insider: “Gerrard walked into the dressing room and brought players like Coutinho in, which is what that club needs.
“He wants that club to do well and his signings have looked great. Coutinho isn’t even fit yet. Once he’s up and running, wow, things will turn around. I am absolutely certain Villa can end the season strong.” Villa travel to the Amex Stadium to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon and will hope to end their three-game winless run in the Premier League.
The Midlands outfit are goalless in their last two games, so they’ll need Coutinho to be at his best.
