Aston Villa welcome Liverpool to Villa Park on Tuesday evening and Steven Gerrard has a decision to make after revealing in his pre-match press conference that Jacob Ramsey will miss the midweek clash due to injury.

Tim Iroegbunam was dropped after Villa’s 2-0 win over Norwich City and was replaced by the impressive Calum Chambers in the defensive-midfield role. Douglas Luiz came in for Ramsey and also put in a brilliant performance.

Liverpool midfielder Thiago will be the one to watch on Tuesday night as everything goes through him on the pitch, so using a defensive-midfielder to nullify his threat isn’t a bad idea.

With Morgan Sanson being deemed surplus to requirements while Marvelous Nakamba has only just returned from injury, Gerrard had little option other than naming an inexperienced academy graduate in the role. Chambers has more experience than Iroegbunam, so he should see the season out.

It wouldn’t be smart not to pack the midfield. Villa need must try to win the ball back, otherwise they’ll spend large portions of the game chasing shadows and getting worn down.

Having a player devoted to sweeping in front of the defence could benefit Villa against the Champions League finalists.
