Aston Villa face another midfield decision as Coventry City progress in talks to sign Ross Barkley.
Sam C reports that Coventry are advancing in negotiations for Barkley, with the Championship club now pushing to sign the experienced Villa midfielder.
Barkley returned to Villa from Luton Town in 2024, but his role under Unai Emery has never looked fully secure. He brought Premier League experience, technical quality and control in possession, but Villa are now reshaping the squad again.
ReadAstonVilla previously covered how Coventry had set their sights on Barkley as a possible summer signing. This latest update suggests that interest has moved into a more serious stage.
Villa Must Weigh Barkley Exit Carefully
Barkley’s possible departure would remove an experienced option from Emery’s midfield group. That is the Villa angle here, especially with the club trying to balance squad depth, wage space and regular minutes for younger players.
The 32-year-old can still offer composure on the ball and the ability to receive under pressure. Those qualities helped him rebuild his career at Luton before Villa brought him back.
The issue is whether Villa can justify keeping that profile if Barkley does not have a clear route to regular football.
Coventry’s interest makes sense. Barkley would bring top-flight experience and strong technical quality to a side looking to strengthen before the new season.
For Villa, the call is more delicate. Emery needs depth, but he also needs a squad with clear roles. If Barkley leaves, Villa should make sure they do not weaken a midfield group that already carries plenty of demand across a long campaign.
Talks have not yet produced a confirmed deal. But Coventry’s progress has turned Barkley’s future into a live Villa decision.
