- Jadon Sancho is expected to leave Manchester United this summer on a free transfer
- Several clubs are rumoured to be after his signature
- Borussia Dortmund’s director confirms they are interested
Jadon Sancho’s tumultuous tenure at Old Trafford appears to be reaching its final act, with the winger set to depart Manchester United as a free agent this summer.
After a series of high-profile loan spells including his current stint at Aston Villa and a previous return to Germany the 26-year-old’s contract is expected to expire in June, ending a disappointing five-year chapter following his £73 million move in 2021.
While Emery has previously expressed an openness to retaining Sancho, reports suggest the club is unlikely to trigger a permanent move, especially as they monitor other targets like United teammate Marcus Rashford
The situation is further complicated by Borussia Dortmund’s public pursuit. Managing director Lars Ricken recently confirmed the German giants are “analysing” a third move for Sancho, putting pressure on Villa to decide if they want to enter a bidding war for a player who would command significant wages.
Speaking recently to Sport Bild, the Dortmund legend said, “We are currently looking at and analysing a lot of players. We are assessing whether they can improve our team. We are doing the same with Jadon.
“Of course, we are looking for an offensive player who brings quality, can help us immediately, and doesn’t require an unrealistic transfer fee.”
Sancho became a star at the Signal Iduna Park before making a £73 million move to Manchester United in July 2021.
He made 137 appearances in his first spell, scoring 50 goals and registering 57 assists. A few seasons later, he rejoined them on loan in January 2024, where he appeared a further 21 times and scored 3 goals and provided 2 assists.
Returning to Germany, where he played his best football, may appeal to him, although his increasing confidence and enjoyment at Aston Villa may sway him differently.
Decision for Villa to make
As our ReadAstonVilla team has previously reported, Villa’s decision to make an offer for the 26-year-old relies entirely on Champions League qualification.
Whilst his attacking output isn’t that high, in the last few months, Sancho has been improving with every match and has become a real threat for the Villans on the right.
Slowly but surely, you can see his confidence in his own ability beginning to rise, and the environment around him is exactly the support he needs to thrive.
Unai Emery is a manager who gets the best out of his players, and he’s starting to do that with the Englishman. Should it continue, then Sancho may finally reach the potential he was once deemed to have.
If he can do that at Villa Park from now until the end of the season, then he may see himself with a future at the club beyond his current loan spell.
For Villa’s recruitment team, the idea of signing him on a free makes sense. Their constant battle with the financial rules means they have to be smart when trying to bring new players in. A deal with no transfer fee and just wages seems ideal, although he will have to reduce his current salary before a potential agreement.
Despite the interest in Sancho, the ball is in Villa’s court. They have two months to evaluate whether he would be a good signing, but also persuade him to make a possible permanent move.
Champions League qualification is the aim, and the No 19’s performances will be needed for them to achieve that. Should it happen, then there is no reason why they couldn’t convince him to remain in the Midlands.
For Villa, the dilemma is clear: do they commit a massive salary to a player who has struggled for consistent fitness and form, or do they allow the Dortmund favorite to return to the Bundesliga, freeing up space for Emery’s summer rebuild?
