Aston Villa vs Liverpool match guide. Team news, predicted XIs, key stats and where to watch

Aston Villa host Liverpool on Friday night at Villa Park in a match that could confirm Champions League qualification for next season.

  • Kick-off is at 8pm BST live on Sky Sports in the UK
  • Both clubs are level on points separated only by goal difference with Liverpool above in fourth
  • Salah is confirmed to return. Wirtz is a doubt due to a stomach infection
  • A Villa victory would mathematically confirm a top-five finish regardless of other results

The Stakes. Champions League on the line

This is the match that could define Villa’s entire Premier League season. Emery’s side sit fifth level on points with Liverpool but separated by goal difference with Bournemouth four points behind and two games remaining. Three points on Friday night would mathematically confirm Champions League qualification through the league. That security would allow Villa to approach next Wednesday’s Europa League final against Freiburg in Istanbul with complete freedom and confidence.

Liverpool’s motivation is equally powerful. The reigning Premier League champions have endured a deeply disappointing title defence losing 11 league games and producing a string of underwhelming performances that have frustrated the Anfield faithful throughout. They lost their last away game 3-2 at Manchester United and drew 1-1 with Chelsea last weekend. Champions League qualification is not yet confirmed and Arne Slot knows that dropping points on Friday could make the final day a deeply uncomfortable afternoon.

Team news. Salah returns, Wirtz a doubt

Slot delivered a significant fitness update in his pre-match press conference. Mohamed Salah, absent for two matches with a thigh injury, has been confirmed available for Friday. However, the manager was cautious about his involvement. “Mo will be available tomorrow for only a few minutes, but hopefully can come in,” Slot stated. His return as a substitute could still prove decisive given the Egyptian’s extraordinary impact in big moments throughout his Liverpool career.

Alisson Becker has returned to first-team training with a late assessment determining whether he is ready to start or must wait one more week. Ibrahima Konaté has resumed full training following his Chelsea scare and should be available. Florian Wirtz remains uncertain due to a stomach infection, the German playmaker is on antibiotics with his involvement subject to a final assessment on Friday.

Four Liverpool players are definitely absent: Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitiké, Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo. Alexander Isak came off the bench against Chelsea and could start against Villa after recovering from injury.

For Villa, Kamara, Onana and Alysson remain unavailable. Buendia is expected to return to the starting XI having dropped to the bench at Burnley. Watkins, involved in 12 goals in his last 13 appearances across all competitions, leads the line.

Predicted Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne; Lindelöf, Tielemans; McGinn, Rogers, Buendia; Watkins.

Predicted Liverpool XI: Mamardashvili; Jones, Konaté, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Wirtz, Szoboszlai, Gakpo; Isak.

Key statistics. History favours Liverpool, but context has changed

The historical record between these two clubs at Villa Park demands honest acknowledgment. Villa have won just one of their last 16 Premier League meetings with Liverpool, the famous 7-2 victory in October 2020. Liverpool have scored at least twice in ten of their last 11 away Premier League games at Villa Park including the last eight consecutively. Furthermore, Liverpool won the reverse fixture at Anfield 2-0 in November.

However, several significant contextual factors swing the balance toward the home side. Villa have not lost their final home league game in any of the six seasons since their Premier League return: a record of four wins and two draws. Liverpool, meanwhile, have not won their final away league game in any of the last three seasons. The Reds have the ninth-worst away record in the division this season, losing eight of 18 matches on the road.

McGinn has been involved in five goals across his last six Villa appearances: two goals and three assists. His ability to dominate the midfield battle against Liverpool’s depleted central unit could prove decisive.

History says Liverpool, context says Villa. The home crowd, the European momentum, the Champions League prize, and a Liverpool side missing key personnel all point toward a Villa victory. However, Salah’s return even for a few minutes is a reminder that one moment of individual brilliance can change any game. Villa must start fast, silence the away end early, and trust in the quality that produced 4-0 against Forest just eight days ago. Friday night at Villa Park. The lights are on. Deliver.
