Ezri Konsa Prepares For Erling Haaland World Cup Clash

For 90 minutes on Saturday night, Aston Villa fans will watch two of their own carry England’s World Cup hopes — and one of them may have to stop Erling Haaland.

England face Norway in Miami at 10pm BST, with a place in the World Cup semi-finals at stake. For Villa, the match is about more than national interest. Ezri Konsa and Morgan Rogers both have key roles to play for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The FA has confirmed England will face Norway in the quarter-finals after their dramatic 3-2 win over co-hosts Mexico. Jude Bellingham scored twice before Harry Kane added a second-half penalty.

Konsa helped England through that match after Jarell Quansah’s red card, and Quansah’s suspension only increases the Villa defender’s importance.

ReadAstonVilla has already covered how Konsa and Rogers helped England move into the last eight. Saturday now gives both players an even bigger stage.

Konsa’s Haaland Duel Could Shape England’s Night

Konsa has faced Haaland often enough in the Premier League to know the size of the task.

Norway will build much of their threat around direct service into the Manchester City striker. Haaland has already scored heavily at this tournament, and England cannot allow him clean supply into the box.

That brings Konsa into focus.

Sky Sports has reported that Konsa could feature in England’s reshuffled defence, with Quansah suspended and doubts around other defensive options. Tuchel’s decision may depend on whether he wants Konsa at right-back or as the right-sided centre-back in a three.

Either role would suit the Villa defender. Konsa’s recovery pace allows England to hold a higher line, while his calmness in one-on-one situations gives Tuchel a defender he can trust against elite movement.

It is the same job Unai Emery has asked him to do for Villa. Konsa rarely looks rushed, even when defending space rather than territory. Against Haaland, that composure matters.

Rogers also has a clear role in England’s plan. Reuters reported that Rogers said England must cut off Haaland’s supply lines, with the Villa forward stressing that stopping Norway’s main threat must start higher up the pitch.

That is where Rogers can help. His pressing, carrying and ability to hold the ball under pressure can stop England becoming stretched. If he starts, he gives Tuchel another player who can turn defensive work into attacking momentum.

What A Deep England Run Means For Villa

There is a cost to all this.

If England beat Norway, Konsa and Rogers will move one step closer to the final. That would be a proud moment for Villa, but it would also delay their return to Bodymoor Heath.

ReadAstonVilla has already covered how Villa are hosting an England screening at Villa Park for the Norway tie. The club have leaned into the occasion, and understandably so.

Still, Emery will have to manage the aftermath. Villa face a demanding domestic season and Champions League football. Late returns, reduced rest and interrupted pre-season plans are all part of the equation.

For now, though, this is the sort of stage Villa should want their players on.

Konsa has spent years being described as underrated. Keeping Haaland quiet in a World Cup quarter-final would move that conversation on quickly.

Rogers, meanwhile, has already become central to England’s attacking plans. Another strong performance would only strengthen the sense that Villa have a player ready for an even bigger role next season.

The ReadAstonVilla Verdict

Villa fans have plenty at stake in Miami.

Konsa faces one of the hardest defensive assignments in world football. Rogers has the chance to shape a knockout tie from the other end of the pitch.

The ideal version is simple. Konsa keeps Haaland quiet, Rogers helps England find a route through Norway, and both return to Villa with their reputations enhanced.

Emery can worry about the pre-season maths later. Nights like this are why clubs want elite international players in the first place.
