Aston Villa consider João Palhinha move after Tielemans exit

Aston Villa are reportedly considering a move for Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha as Unai Emery reshapes his options in central midfield.

Portuguese newspaper Record claims Villa are monitoring the 31-year-old’s situation alongside Juventus, Benfica and Sporting CP.

Palhinha has returned to Bayern following a season-long loan at Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs did not take up their option to sign him permanently after investing heavily in other midfielders.

Record reports that Villa are evaluating a possible move for Palhinha, although no formal offer or direct approach has been confirmed.

Palhinha would give Emery an experienced defensive option

Villa’s interest arrives as Youri Tielemans closes in on a £35m transfer to Manchester United.

ReadAstonVilla has already examined the midfield decision facing Emery after Tielemans’ departure. Palhinha would offer a very different profile to the Belgian.

The Portugal international is primarily a defensive midfielder. He built his reputation at Fulham through his tackling, physical strength and ability to protect the back four.

Those qualities could appeal to Villa following Amadou Onana’s serious injury. Palhinha also has considerable Premier League experience and would require less adaptation than a younger overseas signing.

However, his age and wages would need careful consideration. Bayern are reportedly prepared to sell for around €25m, but Palhinha remains one of the club’s higher earners.

Villa have already agreed a major deal for Johan Manzambi, although the Switzerland international offers more mobility and attacking potential.

Palhinha would instead provide immediate experience and defensive control.

For now, Villa’s interest remains at the assessment stage. Competition from Portugal and Italy could also leave Palhinha with several options before deciding his next move.
