Morgan Rogers provided England’s opening goal but could not prevent a dramatic 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina in Atlanta.
The Aston Villa midfielder created the breakthrough in the 55th minute at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Rogers delivered across the penalty area from the left, allowing Anthony Gordon to finish beyond Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
England appeared on course for their first men’s World Cup final since 1966 as they protected the lead heading into the closing stages.
However, Argentina produced two late goals to complete the comeback. Enzo Fernández equalised with a powerful strike from outside the area in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martínez headed in Lionel Messi’s cross during stoppage time.
The Guardian’s match report confirmed Rogers’ role in Gordon’s opener and Argentina’s late turnaround.
Rogers shows his value on the biggest stage
Rogers’ assist provided another example of the creativity and direct running he has brought to Thomas Tuchel’s England side.
The 23-year-old found space on the left before supplying a controlled delivery across goal. His involvement showed he can influence elite knockout matches rather than simply contribute against weaker opposition.
The result created contrasting emotions among Villa’s World Cup contingent.
Rogers, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins will now remain with England for Saturday’s third-place play-off against France. Martínez will prepare for Sunday’s final against Spain with Argentina.
As Read Aston Villa previewed before the semi-final, the match guaranteed Villa representation in the final while placing four club team-mates on opposing sides.
Rogers will return to Villa disappointed by the result, but his assist strengthens his growing reputation. Unai Emery will again rely on that ability when Villa begin their Premier League and Champions League campaigns.
