Aston Villa hero reveals private tears before World Cup final

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has admitted Argentina’s recent success sometimes moves him to tears as he prepares to face Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final.

The 33-year-old is one victory away from helping Argentina become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to retain the trophy.

Speaking before the final, Martínez said he remains focused on winning but is also trying to appreciate the occasion.

“Honestly, sometimes I cry to myself,” he said while reflecting on Argentina’s achievements in an emotional pre-final interview.

Argentina have won the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles, the 2022 Finalissima and the World Cup in Qatar during a remarkable period under Lionel Scaloni.

Martínez targets more World Cup history

Martínez played a decisive role in the 2022 final against France. His late extra-time save from Randal Kolo Muani kept Argentina alive before they won the penalty shootout.

The Villa goalkeeper believes he has improved since Qatar, particularly with the ball at his feet and through his decision-making.

He entered the tournament carrying a fractured finger suffered while representing Villa in May’s Europa League final. Despite the injury, Martínez has helped Argentina reach another final.

Their dramatic 2-1 semi-final victory over England ended the campaigns of his Villa team-mates Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins.

Read Aston Villa previously detailed how Martínez is one win away from an historic achievement, with no goalkeeper retaining the trophy since Brazil’s Gilmar in 1962.

Martínez has urged his team-mates to prepare with smiles and enjoy an occasion they will remember throughout their lives.

Victory over Spain would further strengthen his status as an Argentina legend before he returns to Villa ahead of the new season.
