Aston Villa’s pursuit of João Palhinha has taken a fresh twist after reports that the midfielder was travelling to Birmingham for a medical were dismissed.
Villa remain among the leading contenders to sign the Bayern Munich midfielder, alongside Portuguese giants Benfica.
However, Sky Germany reports that Palhinha is not expected at Villa on Saturday. Bayern have yet to reach an agreement with either interested club.
The 31-year-old is therefore scheduled to return to Munich on Sunday and begin pre-season training with the Bundesliga champions.
Aston Villa face Benfica battle for Palhinha
Villa’s interest remains concrete despite the conflicting medical reports.
Unai Emery needs midfield reinforcements following Youri Tielemans’ departure to Manchester United and the serious knee injury suffered by Amadou Onana at the World Cup.
Read Aston Villa previously reported that the club were preparing a loan proposal containing an option to sign Palhinha permanently.
Bayern would prefer a permanent transfer as sporting director Max Eberl looks to move the Portugal international out of Vincent Kompany’s squad.
Palhinha spent last season on loan at Tottenham, but Spurs decided against activating their purchase option. His Bayern contract runs until June 2028, strengthening the German club’s negotiating position.
Benfica can offer Palhinha a return to Portugal, although Villa are expected to present the stronger financial package and Champions League football.
Reports of an imminent medical appear premature, but Villa remain firmly involved. Fresh negotiations will be required before Palhinha can travel to England or complete any move away from Bayern.
