Unai Emery reacts after Modou Keba Cisse decision in Villa defeat

Unai Emery’s reaction to Modou Keba Cisse offered the Aston Villa defender an early lesson in his manager’s demands during Tuesday’s 4-2 defeat against Real Sociedad.

Cisse started alongside Tyrone Mings and produced several composed moments during the first half at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.

However, Emery became visibly frustrated when the 20-year-old abandoned Villa’s patient build-up and played a hopeful long ball forward. Cisse acknowledged the instruction by raising his hand towards the bench.

Unai Emery reaction to Modou Keba Cisse explained

Emery wants his centre-backs to retain possession and draw opponents forward before playing through pressure. Cisse’s decision surrendered the ball rather than allowing Villa to continue building from defence.

Aston Villa News reported that the head coach immediately made his feelings clear from the technical area. The incident was brief, but it illustrated the tactical detail expected from Villa’s defenders.

Cisse otherwise produced another encouraging pre-season display. He made an important intervention to prevent Orri Oskarsson from going through on goal before being replaced by Lamare Bogarde at half-time.

ReadAstonVilla’s match report covered the 4-2 defeat, including goals from George Hemmings and Brian Madjo. Madjo’s second-half equaliser was his third goal of pre-season.

Cisse joined Villa’s senior squad this summer after spending last season with LASK. His performances in Austria showed he is comfortable in possession, but Emery will continue refining when and how he progresses the ball.

The defender’s response to the instruction was also important. He accepted Emery’s criticism immediately and continued playing without allowing the incident to affect his performance.

Cisse remains an inexperienced player adapting to a demanding tactical system. Tuesday’s exchange should be viewed as part of that development rather than a lasting concern.
