Aston Villa have moved to the brink of signing Matteo Ruggeri after the Atletico Madrid defender accepted the club’s proposal, removing the final major hurdle in the transfer.
Villa had already reached an agreement with Atletico for the Italy international, reportedly worth €18million up front with a further €6m available in bonuses.
That approval has now arrived.
Matteo Ruggeri Aston Villa move moves towards completion
Transfer reporter Matteo Moretto reported that Ruggeri has now accepted Aston Villa’s offer, clearing the way for the remaining formalities to be completed.
There has not yet been an official announcement from Villa, so the transfer should not be considered formally completed until the club confirms the move.
However, agreement between Villa, Atletico and the player leaves Unai Emery close to adding another important piece to his summer rebuild.
Ruggeri would strengthen an area Villa have been looking to address following uncertainty at left-back.
The 24-year-old offers significant senior experience after spells with Atalanta and Atletico, while his physical profile fits the type of defender Emery has been targeting this summer.
Villa had also explored other options at left-back, but Ruggeri has moved rapidly to the front of the queue.
His expected arrival would give Emery another natural option on the left and increase competition within a squad preparing for another Champions League campaign.
Formal confirmation is now the final step.
