Opta supercomputer delivers worrying Aston Villa verdict before PSG final

Bayern Munich players training ahead of pre-season friendly with Aston Villa

Aston Villa have been handed a daunting statistical verdict just hours before facing Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final.

Opta’s supercomputer has simulated Aston Villa vs PSG 10,000 times, with Unai Emery’s side winning only 29.6% of the matches inside 90 minutes.

Champions League holders PSG won 45% of the simulations, while the remaining 25.5% finished level and would therefore have required penalties under this season’s Super Cup rules.

Aston Villa vs PSG prediction favours European champions

Opta’s latest Super Cup prediction consequently makes PSG clear favourites in Salzburg.

Villa should not view those numbers as evidence that an upset is beyond them.

Emery’s side already demonstrated their ability to hurt Luis Enrique’s team during their Champions League quarter-final in 2025. Villa won the second leg 3-2 at Villa Park and threatened an extraordinary comeback before eventually losing the tie 5-4 on aggregate.

Tonight’s task has been complicated by Villa’s preparations and several important selection decisions.

ReadAstonVilla looked at three major calls Emery must make after Villa’s latest PSG blow, with Tammy Abraham among those pushing to lead the attack.

PSG also arrive without ideal preparation following the World Cup, giving Villa another potential route into the contest.

Opta’s model makes Enrique’s side favourites, but a 29.6% Villa victory probability inside normal time is still significant. More than half of the simulations also ended without a PSG victory after 90 minutes.

For Emery, who has lost each of his previous three UEFA Super Cup finals, tonight offers another opportunity to overturn the numbers and finally lift the trophy.
