Aston Villa handed huge opening-day edge by Brighton’s Arctic Circle trip

Brighton vs Aston Villa comes with an unusual opening-day advantage for Unai Emery’s side, with the Seagulls facing a European trip to the Arctic Circle just three days before Sunday’s Premier League opener.

Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton travel to Norway to face Tromsø in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League play-off on Thursday, 20 August.

Villa then arrive at the Amex Stadium at 2pm on Sunday, 23 August, leaving Brighton with a demanding Thursday-to-Sunday turnaround before the first Premier League game of the season. Villa’s official fixture announcement confirms the Sunday scheduling is specifically because of Brighton’s involvement in the Conference League play-offs.

For Emery, it could provide an early opportunity to exploit tired legs.

Brighton vs Aston Villa follows demanding European trip

Tromsø is not a routine midweek away day.

The Norwegian city sits around 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, with Brighton travelling into northern Norway before returning to the south coast and immediately preparing for Villa.

Brighton must also take Thursday seriously.

They are not yet guaranteed a place in the Conference League proper. UEFA’s format means the play-off is contested over two legs on 20 and 27 August, with only the winners progressing into the league phase.

That creates an awkward balancing act for Hürzeler.

Rotate heavily in Norway and Brighton risk putting their European campaign in danger. Select a strong side and some of the same players may then be asked to start again less than three days later against Villa.

Unai Emery does not have that problem.

Villa completed their pre-season programme against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, 15 August, giving Emery more than a week between matches to prepare his team for Brighton.

Emery can make Brighton’s tired legs hurt

The potential advantage may become more important as Sunday’s game develops.

European travel does not automatically make Brighton vulnerable. Hürzeler has a deep squad and will have the opportunity to rotate players between the two competitions.

But Villa should still be looking to make the turnaround uncomfortable.

Emery’s side can force Brighton to defend for long periods, move the ball quickly across the pitch and introduce fresh attacking players later in the game. That becomes increasingly useful if several Brighton starters have already played significant minutes in Norway.

Villa also have an encouraging record at the Amex.

Emery’s side won a dramatic 4-3 game there last season, while Aston Villa confirm they have won four of their previous five visits to Brighton and lost only once in seven Premier League trips to the stadium.

There are still significant questions around Villa themselves, particularly injuries and several unresolved transfer situations.

Yet the preparation schedule is one area where Emery appears to have the clearer hand.

Brighton must first negotiate a competitive European tie 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle.

Villa can spend the entire week preparing to punish them for it.
