‘He doesn’t tick the right boxes’: Jack Grealish sent Aston Villa return verdict

Jack Grealish Aston Villa

Jack Grealish has been told why an emotional Aston Villa return may not happen, with Tony Cascarino questioning whether the Manchester City winger fits the profile Unai Emery now demands at Villa Park.

Grealish’s future remains uncertain heading into the final days of the transfer window.

Aston Villa and Everton have both been credited with loan interest in the 30-year-old, while talkSPORT reports that Grealish would currently prefer a return to Everton if he leaves Manchester City.

That has not stopped discussion around a possible Villa homecoming.

ReadAstonVilla previously reported that Villa had discussed the possibility of re-signing Grealish, five years after his £100million departure for City.

Jack Grealish sent Aston Villa warning

Tony Cascarino believes the romantic appeal of Grealish returning to his boyhood club may not match the realities of Emery’s current squad.

talkSPORT reports that Cascarino believes Grealish does not “tick the right boxes” for Emery, questioning whether his profile suits the system Villa have developed.

That view was challenged by Alan Brazil, who argued that Grealish’s ability to retain possession and protect the ball could still provide significant value.

The debate comes at a time when Villa’s attacking group has changed dramatically.

Morgan Rogers has joined Chelsea, while Nicolas Jackson has arrived permanently and Ibrahim Mbaye is closing in on his own move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Villa’s recruitment has increasingly focused on athleticism, speed and younger players capable of developing within Emery’s structure.

Our earlier look at the wide players Aston Villa have targeted this summer showed the emphasis being placed on adding pace and depth across the attacking positions.

Grealish faces decision over Manchester City future

Grealish remains under contract at City, but his position has become increasingly uncertain.

talkSPORT reports he has entered the final year of his deal and City would prefer a permanent departure rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer. Villa and Everton have both explored a possible loan.

His previous Everton spell produced two goals and six assists in 22 appearances before a foot injury ended his campaign prematurely.

A Villa return would undoubtedly carry huge emotional appeal.

Whether it makes the same sense for Emery’s current team is now the more difficult question.
