Club Brugge vs Aston Villa prediction as Emery seeks European response

Aston Villa begin their 2026/27 Champions League campaign away to Club Brugge on Tuesday evening, with Unai Emery searching for a response after a difficult domestic start. Our Club Brugge vs Aston Villa prediction is a 1-1 draw in Belgium.

Villa have taken only one point from their opening three Premier League games and are still waiting for their first league goal.

Club Brugge arrive in far better domestic form, but Villa’s European record under Emery and their previous success at the Jan Breydel Stadium provide reasons for optimism.

Club Brugge vs Aston Villa form

Villa’s league campaign has started poorly.

Emery’s side opened with a 4-0 defeat at Brighton before losing 1-0 to Arsenal at Villa Park.

Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Hull City finally delivered a first point and clean sheet, but Villa remained without a Premier League goal.

There were at least some signs of attacking improvement.

Our analysis of Aston Villa’s xG against Hull showed that Villa finally began creating substantially better chances, even if the finishing remained a problem.

Club Brugge have experienced a much stronger start.

The Belgian champions have won four of their opening five league games and sit second domestically, with their only defeat coming against Gent.

That contrast makes Villa’s European opener an intriguing test.

Club Brugge home record gives Aston Villa warning

Villa should not underestimate the challenge posed by Tuesday’s venue.

UEFA confirms that Club Brugge have lost only three of their last 22 European home matches, winning 13 and drawing six.

They have also progressed beyond the initial Champions League stage in each of their previous three campaigns.

However, their recent record against English opposition is far less intimidating.

UEFA notes that Club Brugge’s 1-0 victory against Villa in November 2024 is their only win in their last 19 games against English clubs, with 15 defeats across that sequence.

Villa themselves know both sides of playing in Bruges.

They lost 1-0 there during the 2024/25 league phase before returning several months later and winning 3-1 in the Champions League round of 16.

Villa then completed a 6-1 aggregate victory with a 3-0 win at Villa Park.

Aston Villa team news vs Club Brugge

The most important midfield change could involve João Gomes.

The Brazilian remains suspended from domestic football following his red card against Brighton, but he is available in Europe and included in Villa’s registered Champions League squad.

That could see Gomes return alongside Boubacar Kamara.

Johan Manzambi remains a major doubt as he works back from a knee injury, while Amadou Onana is a long-term absentee. Brian Madjo is also currently sidelined.

Leon Goretzka’s position requires further clarification after the summer signing unexpectedly missed the Hull matchday squad.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis cannot feature after being omitted from Villa’s league-phase squad.

Further forward, £47million signing Ibrahim Mbaye is pushing for his first start after remaining an unused substitute at Hull.

We expect several changes in our Aston Villa predicted XI against Club Brugge.

For Club Brugge, defender Joel Ordóñez is currently their major confirmed injury absentee, while captain Hans Vanaken and three-goal striker Nicolò Tresoldi provide two of the hosts’ biggest threats.

Why Aston Villa can respond in Europe

Domestic form makes it difficult to confidently back Villa for victory.

But Emery’s European record deserves significant weight.

Villa reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2024/25 before winning the Europa League last season.

Their previous Champions League campaign included eight wins from 12 matches, with Villa showing repeatedly that their European performances can exceed their domestic level.

That experience could matter against Club Brugge.

Villa have also demonstrated they can win at this stadium, while Gomes’ return should strengthen a midfield which has lacked intensity during the opening weeks.

The question remains whether the attack can finally convert improved chance creation into goals.

Nicolas Jackson is still waiting for his first Villa goal, although we have already explained why Jackson’s slow Aston Villa start is no reason to panic.

Mbaye and Alejandro Garnacho give Emery options if he wants to inject more pace around the £65m striker.

Club Brugge vs Aston Villa predicted score

There are legitimate reasons to back either team.

Club Brugge have four wins from five league games and an outstanding European home record.

Villa have started badly domestically but remain an experienced European side under one of the competition’s most accomplished coaches.

Tuesday may therefore come slightly too early for Emery’s rebuilt team to produce a complete performance.

However, Gomes’ availability and Villa’s improving chance creation should help them finally end their goal drought.

Prediction: Club Brugge 1-1 Aston Villa.
