Unai Emery has strongly suggested Aston Villa’s squad will change again before the transfer window closes following Wednesday night’s 2-1 UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Villa pushed the Champions League holders closely in Salzburg, with Brian Madjo scoring a historic equaliser before Désiré Doué eventually secured the trophy for PSG.
Emery was proud of Villa’s performance, but his comments after full-time quickly turned towards the work still being done behind the scenes.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the final, Emery confirmed Villa remain active in the market and suggested further changes are coming.
Aston Villa transfer news could accelerate after PSG defeat
“We are in the transfer window,” Emery said, before adding that “some circumstances will change” and Villa still have “a lot of work to do”.
Those comments arrive during an increasingly busy period at Villa Park.
Villa received a significant breakthrough on Wednesday evening when João Palhinha agreed personal terms and informed Bayern Munich that he wants to join Emery’s side.
ReadAstonVilla reported how João Palhinha agreed Aston Villa terms ahead of a potential blockbuster transfer, although an agreement between the two clubs still needs to be reached.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is another player under consideration as Villa look to strengthen at right-back, while Matteo Ruggeri has also been heavily linked with a move from Atletico Madrid.
There have already been significant changes to Emery’s squad this summer and Wednesday’s starting XI illustrated how different Villa could look this season.
Emery nevertheless remains confident in the direction of the club.
Villa competed impressively with PSG despite several senior absences and significant squad turnover, but his comments suggest the group supporters saw in Salzburg is unlikely to be the finished product.
With the transfer window still open, the next stage of Villa’s rebuild could now move quickly.
