What Aston Villa can expect from Club Brugge in Champions League opener

Aston Villa’s Champions League opener against Club Brugge offers Unai Emery an immediate opportunity to reset after a difficult start to the Premier League season, but the Belgian champions arrive in considerably stronger form.

Villa travel to the Jan Breydel Stadium on Tuesday after Saturday’s goalless draw at Hull extended their wait for a Premier League goal.

Supporters preparing for the fixture can find Club Brugge vs Aston Villa TV information, kick-off time and early team news in our complete match guide.

However, Club Brugge’s recent record provides Villa with a warning before their Champions League campaign begins.

Ivan Leko’s side have won four of their opening five Belgian Pro League matches, scoring nine goals and conceding only two.

They have also kept four clean sheets.

According to FBref’s Club Brugge statistics for 2026/27, the defending Belgian champions have taken 12 points from a possible 15 and currently average 2.4 points per game.

Club Brugge form before Aston Villa clash

Club Brugge’s five league results this season are:

  • Club Brugge 3-0 Kortrijk
  • OH Leuven 0-3 Club Brugge
  • Club Brugge 1-0 Cercle Brugge
  • Gent 2-1 Club Brugge
  • Lommel 0-1 Club Brugge

That represents four victories, four clean sheets and a goal difference of +7.

Their only defeat came away at Gent on 30 August.

Club responded on Friday night by beating Lommel 1-0, although the performance also offered Villa some encouragement.

The only goal was a Timothy Eyoma own goal shortly before half-time, while Nicolò Tresoldi later had an effort ruled out. Club managed just three shots on target despite controlling more of the possession.

Villa’s own attacking numbers improved considerably at Hull, as our Aston Villa xG analysis showed, but Emery’s side still failed to convert their chances.

Tuesday therefore brings together a Villa attack searching for its breakthrough against one of Belgium’s most difficult teams to score against.

Club Brugge have formidable European home record

Domestic form is only part of the warning.

Club Brugge have lost just three of their last 22 UEFA home matches, winning 13 and drawing six.

UEFA highlighted that formidable Jan Breydel record in its official Matchday 1 statistical preview.

Villa already know how difficult the stadium can be.

Their first Champions League visit to Bruges in November 2024 ended in a 1-0 defeat.

Emery’s side responded spectacularly several months later.

Villa beat Club Brugge 3-1 in Belgium and 3-0 at Villa Park during the 2024/25 round of 16, meaning Villa now lead the overall European head-to-head by two victories to one.

The history should provide confidence.

The recent home record should prevent complacency.

Nicolò Tresoldi gives Aston Villa defence major threat

Nicolò Tresoldi is one of the players Villa will need to contain.

The 22-year-old striker has scored three league goals already this season, making him Club Brugge’s leading scorer after five matches.

Tresoldi scored from the penalty spot against Kortrijk before finding the net again during the 3-0 victory at OH Leuven.

Carlos Forbs represents another major attacking threat.

The Portuguese winger has one league goal and three assists this season, while Mamadou Diakhon has already contributed one goal and two assists.

Club therefore possess pace around their centre-forward as well as several players capable of creating chances.

That could test a Villa defence which remains in transition following the summer rebuild.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis cannot feature after being omitted from Villa’s league-phase squad, with Emery having already explained the £30m defender’s Champions League absence.

Hans Vanaken remains heartbeat of Club Brugge

The most recognisable threat remains Hans Vanaken.

UEFA describes the 34-year-old midfielder as the “heartbeat” of Club Brugge after more than 550 appearances and 150 goals for the Belgian club.

He also passed 100 appearances in UEFA club competitions last season.

Vanaken has started all five league matches this season and already has a goal.

His ability to dictate possession between midfield and attack makes limiting his influence one of Villa’s biggest tactical tasks.

Leko has recently deployed Club in a 4-2-3-1, with Vanaken operating centrally alongside Freddie Potts and with attacking players supporting Tresoldi. Their latest win at Lommel featured Yann Sommer in goal behind a back four, with Vanaken, Hugo Vetlesen, Romeo Vermant and Diakhon supporting the attack.

Yann Sommer has transformed Club Brugge defence

There is another familiar European name waiting for Villa.

Former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer joined Club Brugge during the summer and has started every league game.

The Swiss goalkeeper has conceded just two goals in five matches, keeping four clean sheets.

UEFA selected Sommer as Club Brugge’s major summer signing after a career which included two Champions League final appearances in three seasons with Inter.

For a Villa side currently struggling to score, facing a goalkeeper with that experience and an early-season 0.4 goals-against-per-game record is hardly ideal.

Aston Villa cannot expect an easy European reset

Villa have the individual quality to win in Belgium.

They also have positive memories from their 3-1 victory at the Jan Breydel Stadium during the 2024/25 knockout phase.

But this is a Club Brugge side entering Tuesday with four wins from five league games, four clean sheets and another Belgian title behind them.

They have reached the knockout phase of the Champions League in three of the previous four seasons and won their 20th Belgian championship in 2025/26.

Villa’s complete Champions League schedule contains glamorous meetings with Barcelona, PSG and Borussia Dortmund.

Bruges may not have the same headline appeal.

For Emery’s rebuilt side, however, Tuesday could prove one of their more revealing European tests.
