Tyrone Mings was delighted with Aston Villa’s defensive display after Unai Emery’s side secured a 1-0 victory against Newcastle United on Saturday.
Aston Villa had to dig deep to preserve their thin lead, showing plenty of character when Newcastle United pushed for an equaliser late in the game.
Johan Manzambi’s goal in the opening period proved to be the difference on a brilliant defensive display evening for Villa, but there was plenty of work to do at the other end. Mings and his teammates stood firm under pressure, with the defender particularly pleased to leave St. James’ Park without conceding.
Mings praises Villa’s response to a difficult challenge
The Villa defender described the result as an important one and was pleased with the work the squad had put in throughout the season.
“It feels like a really big win,” Mings said after the game.
“Super proud of everything that we’ve put into the season so far.
“It feels at times like we’ve had a lot of changes, but the manager is keen to reiterate that we have a ‘no excuse’ culture.
“We have enough players here that have experienced St. James’ Park before, have experienced the league before, and we’ve added some fantastic players.”
Mings acknowledged the challenge of playing away at Newcastle, but felt Villa had plenty of reasons to celebrate after the final whistle.
Brilliant team effort from Aston Villa won the game
The 33-year-old was especially pleased with the clean sheet, given the effort required to see out the game.
“I’m super proud to come here and keep a clean sheet. I even rolled back the years to 2015/16 and played left-back for 10-15 minutes!
“I think that shows what’s going on at the club at the moment. Everybody’s putting in a shift – the players that played on Wednesday and went again today – everybody can be super proud of today’s result.”
Aston Villa climb to 12th place in the Premier League with the win and 8 points.
