Ross Barkley has come to life this season after becoming a key part of Unai Emery’s team, featuring in all 14 games this season.
Unai Emery has opted for the 32-year-old to feature in all 14 of Villa’s matches this season despite links of a move away from Villa Park in the summer. The midfielder has been a key player for Emery as he looks to put Aston Villa back on track after a slow start to the season.
With less than a year remaining on his current deal, Aston Villa are keen to keep him at Villa club. Aston Villa are planning to offer Ross Barkley a contract extension, which is being personally led by Unai Emery as per reports by former Villa scout Mick Brown.
Emery wants Aston Villa to keep Ross Barkley
Brown believes Ross Barkley has not received enough recognition for his recent performances and expects Villa to take steps towards securing his future. Speaking to Football Insider, he said:
“Ross Barkley has become a bit of an underrated player for Aston Villa recently,” Brown told Football Insider.
“He’s playing a big role in their team at the moment, starting games quite often, and the manager has recently spoken about how valuable of an asset he is for the squad.
“So when it comes to his contract situation, I expect he will be offered a new deal by Aston Villa, and I expect Emery will be playing a big part in that.”
It is yet to be seen what Ross Barkley wants from a new agreement and whether both parties can reach an arrangement but Villa are keen to tie him to a new deal.
Aston Villa look to secure Barkley’s future
Brown believes Barkley’s contribution gives Aston Villa enough reason to extend his stay.
“It’s something they’ll be working on behind the scenes, to assess what he might be asked for, how he feels about a new deal, and whether it would be in their interest.
“But I think they’ll be edging towards offering a new deal because of what he can offer them and the role he is still playing in Unai Emery’s plans.”
