Steven Gerrard has favoured a 4-3-2-1 and 4-3-1-2 formation at Aston Villa, packing the midfield with a ball-player, box-to-box man and ball-winner, allowing the playmaker(s) ahead of them to create opportunities. And with three midfielders (Morgan Sanson, Douglas Luiz, Conor Hourihane) having an uncertain future at Villa Park, Gerrard has a replacement who would fit […]
There could be a midfield exodus at Aston Villa this summer with Douglas Luiz, Morgan Sanson and Conor Hourihane being linked with a departure, but Steven Gerrard may have already lined up a replacement – Joe Aribo. The 25-year-old joined Rangers on a four-year deal from Charlton Athletic in 2019 and has gone on to […]
Read Aston Villa previously suggested Traore may be on his way out of Villa this summer after falling down the pecking order and Alan Hutton seems to agree. The 26-year-old has made only nine appearances in all competitions this season, failing to score or make an assist while amassing a paltry 244 minutes of playing […]
Matty Cash has enjoyed an impressive campaign at Aston Villa, resulting in him being named Supporters Player of the Season, so it’s not surprising that he’s attracted interest from overseas. Calciomercato (h/t Sport Witness) say the 24-year-old is a transfer target for Atalanta, but it’s hard to see the Serie A outfit procuring his signature […]
Frederic Guilbert’s loan spell at Racing Strasbourg has come to an end. He re-joined the Ligue 1 outfit last summer and went on to make 34 appearances in all competitions, grabbing four assists. The 27-year-old greatly impressed at the Stade de la Meinau but isn’t turning the move permanent, so he’ll return to Aston Villa […]
Aston Villa are overstocked in midfield with Douglas Luiz, Marvelous Nakamba, John McGinn, Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Sanson on the books, but Luiz has been linked with a move away, Nakamba may not command a starting place next season and Sanson is surplus to requirements, so Steven Gerrard could bring in at least one new […]
Aston Villa confirmed earlier in May that they’d signed Philippe Coutinho on a permanent deal and Alan Hutton believes he’s an ‘incredible’ acquisition. The 29-year-old has scored four goals with three assists in 17 Premier League games for Villa, though he’s suffered a dip in form since March. Steven Gerrard was determined to sign Coutinho […]
Emiliano Buendia has been in fine form of late, contributing three goals in his last four Premier League appearances, but his debut season has been mixed. The 25-year-old has scored three goals with six assists in 33 league games, creating 44 chances, making 39/63 successful dribbles and hitting the target with 30% of his shots, […]
Leon Bailey hasn’t been seen in Aston Villa’s matchday squad since April, last featuring in their 2-0 win over Norwich City. He’s endured an injury-hit debut season and doesn’t command a starting place when fit due to Steven Gerrard preferring to pack the midfield, so does he have a long-term future at Villa Park? Gerrard […]
Ezri Konsa picked up a knee injury in Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon and was withdrawn in the 49th minute. Steven Gerrard admitted being “concerned” after the game and said it would be “surprising” if the 24-year-old plays again for Villa this season, so a replacement centre-back might be required […]
Bertrand Traore was left on the bench as Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon. The 26-year-old has amassed only 21 minutes of Premier League football since early-January and isn’t getting a look-in under Steven Gerrard. Villa have lined up in a 4-3-2-1 or 4-3-1-2 formation under Gerrard, packing the midfield in […]
Aston Villa weren’t at their best in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, but Matty Cash can be pleased with his defensive performance at Villa Park. The 24-year-old had Wilfried Zaha and Eberechi Eze for company but did his best not to give much away. Cash wasn’t able to affect the game as much in […]
