Leon Goretzka at Aston Villa
Leon Goretzka joined Aston Villa on a free transfer in August 2026 after leaving Bayern Munich.
The Germany international arrived as one of the most experienced additions of Unai Emery’s summer rebuild, bringing Champions League, Bundesliga and international pedigree to Villa Park.
Villa moved quickly once Goretzka became available, with Emery directly involved as the midfielder agreed to continue his career in the Premier League.
You can read more about the deal in our original report on Aston Villa’s agreement to sign Leon Goretzka.
Goretzka has yet to make his competitive Aston Villa debut, however, after suffering a fitness setback during his first weeks at the club.
The midfielder explained that his body had reacted to an increased workload after a period without regular competitive football.
Fresh reporting now indicates that Villa may have to wait until October to see him in action, with our latest Leon Goretzka injury update tracking his recovery and expected return.
Why Aston Villa signed Leon Goretzka
Goretzka gives Emery another experienced option in central midfield.
At 189cm, he offers physical presence as well as the ability to make forward runs from deeper positions.
His experience could also become particularly valuable as Villa balance Premier League football with another Champions League campaign.
Goretzka made more than 200 Bundesliga appearances during his eight years with Bayern Munich and won multiple domestic titles alongside the Champions League.
He has also been a regular member of Germany’s senior international setup.
That combination of experience and versatility made him an attractive free-agent opportunity for Villa.
Leon Goretzka injury and Aston Villa debut
Goretzka’s Villa debut has been delayed by a knee and fitness problem.
He initially appeared close to being included in Emery’s squad after completing additional training sessions, but he was absent against Hull City and subsequently missed the Champions League victory over Club Brugge.
The midfielder later confirmed that his body needed time to adapt after his workload increased sharply following his move.
Villa are therefore taking a cautious approach rather than rushing him into action.
The current expectation is that Goretzka will remain unavailable through the September fixtures and target a return in October.
His fitness status will continue to be updated on this page, while all current absences can be followed through our Aston Villa injuries hub.
Leon Goretzka’s career before Aston Villa
Goretzka began his professional career with VfL Bochum before joining Schalke in 2013.
Five strong Bundesliga seasons earned him a move to Bayern Munich in 2018.
He became an important member of one of Europe’s strongest squads, winning numerous Bundesliga titles and playing a significant role in Bayern’s 2019/20 Champions League triumph.
Goretzka also established himself with Germany and has represented his country at major international tournaments.
After eight seasons in Munich, his Bayern contract expired in 2026.
Villa subsequently secured him without paying a transfer fee.
Once fit, Goretzka will compete with the likes of Boubacar Kamara, João Gomes and Villa’s other midfield options for a place in Emery’s side.
His appearances, minutes and statistics will continue to be updated here throughout the 2026/27 season.
