Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth has admitted that he wants to turn Benjamin Siegrist’s loan move from Aston Villa into a permanent transfer in the summer.
Siegrist joined Wycombe on loan in March and was finally handed his debut of Saturday as they lost 1-0 to Accrington Stanley.
Ainsworth told the Bucks Free Press that the reason he gave Siegrist the starting role was to get an assessment of how he plays in games after being impressed by how he’d been training.
He said:
Benji has been here for seven or eight weeks and hasn’t played a game. The only time I can get a look at him is in a first team game and that goes for every player here. Today was a chance to look at a keeper who I think is good enough to play in League Two and I was very impressed with what I saw.

Ainsworth also said that he had a ‘gem’ in Siegrist and that he’d be looking to make him move to the Chairboys permanent in the summer.
We have got a potential gem in Benjamin Siegrist now. It is all about this club and whether we can get players like that. I will be working hard in the summer to do that.
The Swiss U21 international admitted that he moved to Wycombe on loan hoping to secure a permanent switch.
He said:
That was the plan [to stay beyond the initial loan] and the manager brought me in to look at me in training, so I am thankful for the opportunity.
Siegrist has been at Villa since 2009 after moving from FC Basel but he’s not managed to break into the first team and at age 24, he feels like he needs to move on to advance his career.
