New Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo has outlined his plans for the summer as he looks to put together a squad that is capable of getting the club promoted at the first time of asking following their horrendous 2015/16 season that saw them relegated from the Premier League.
The Italian knows the Championship well after helping get fellow Midlands club West Brom promoted in 2010. He was brought in to replace Tony Mowbray after the Baggies were relegated and got them back to the top-flight straight away.
That’ll be the aim at Villa too, and as such, he’s started to get his plans in place regarding his squad for the upcoming campaign.

The likes of Janoi Donacien, Lewis Kinsella, Charles N’Zogbia and Kieran Richardson have already been let go and Di Matteo said he had to let them leave as he had too many players.
He told the Birmingham Mail:
First of all when I analysed the squad I think we have too many players, the squad is too big so I will certainly look to trim the squad.
The Italian also spoke about the type of players he will be looking to recruit:
I will try to identify the right players for this season that will give us an edge and improve the team in many aspects. Physical aspects, technical aspects and also the human aspects. It’s important that we create a group of individuals that work as a team. I think that’s vital that we have a good, united team on the pitch.
