New Aston Villa owner Tony Xia has confirmed that a new striker is the number one priority for Aston Villa this summer as the club look to build a squad that can get them back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.
As reported by Mat Kendrick of the Birmingham Mail, Xia said he will not interfere with Roberto Di Matteo’s plans in terms of recruitment, but did reveal that the club are in the market for at least one new striker.
He said:
A strong striker is a first priority for us. I don’t want to put too much pressure on the manager. He is the one who has the ability to get things done.
There are numerous statistics that you can look at to show just how poor Villa were last season, none more so than the fact that they only managed to score 27 goals in 38 Premier League games. If Di Matteo is to get the Villans promoted at the first time of asking, he needs to rectify the goal-shy nature of the team as a matter of urgency.
