Stiliyan Petrov has revealed he will not return to professional football in an interview with Bulgarian TV station Kanal 3.
The former Aston Villa captain had been hopeful of earning a short term deal at Villa Park after heroically coming back from battling leukaemia.
There will be no comebacks
Petrov trained with the Villans throughout pre season in the hope of impressing Roberto Di Matteo and even played a part in Villa’s opening pre season games against Worcester City and GAK in Austria.
My return to professional football has failed but I will explain the reasons at a later stage.
The 37 year old had ambitions of returning back to the club he left in 2013 as he fought against leukaemia, but it wasn’t to be as he failed to win a deal.
During his time as a professional Petrov made 457 appearances including 185 of those whilst in a claret and blue shirt of Aston Villa.
I am glad I was able to come back and do a pre-season, but sometimes things do not work out the way we want.
The former captain inspired thousands of people for his determination to get fit and play professional sport again.
We wish Stiliyan Petrov all the best in what he decides to do in the future.
