Grealish “must learn from the past” if he wants a Villa career

Roberto Di Matteo will welcome Jack Grealish back into his squad for the upcoming trip to Barnsley after fining and suspending him after his late-night party in a Birmingham hotel.

The 21-year-old missed the 1-1 draw with Newcastle and was fined £50,000 after it emerged that he’d been partying all night at a hotel and that balloons and nitrous oxide had been found inside the room.

As reported by Kieran Gill of the Daily Mail, Di Matteo said that he will include Grealish in his matchday squad for Tuesday but warned the midfielder that he needs to cut out some of his off-field actions if he wants to have a successful career as a professional footballer.

He said:

We’ve fined the boy and he was suspended. Tomorrow he will be back with the group and available for selection. We’ll move on. That’s the end of the matter as far as the club is concerned. It’s not the first time but he needs to learn from the past. The only one who can do that is himself. We will try and support him but he needs to make the right decisions. He is 21 now and he needs to understand what kind of career he’s got ahead of him. As long as he does what he’s supposed to do and he is part of the group, then we will treat him like everybody else.

Whether the midfielder comes straight back into the starting lineup or if he has to settle for a place on the bench remains to be seen but it looks like he’s now on a very short leash from this point onwards.
