Alan Hutton retires from international football

Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has retired from international football after pulling out of Scotland’s squad to face England.

Speaking to the Observer (Guardian) about his retirement decision Hutton spoke about giving others an opportunity in the squad and that he would like to thank all the managers who have supported him throughout his ten year international career.

He also said it was a time to spend more time with his family.

I feel this is the right time to spend more time with my family, put everything I have professionally into doing well at Villa and give others a chance for Scotland.

The decision has come as a shock to many with Scotland boss Gordon Strachan said to be surprised by the Scot’s decision.

Hutton moved to Villa Park from Tottenham Hotspur 2011 and has since gone on to make over 90 appearances.

Nobody really expected Hutton to be a regular this season but after a season ending injury for Ritchie De Laet and Leandro Bacuna being pushed into midfield Hutton has started the past few games.
