Jonathan Kodjia could be back in time for Villa’s Championship clash with Brentford on Tuesday 31st January.
Villa were due to be playing Bristol City this weekend, but The Robins are involved in an FA Cup game instead. Ultimately, this works in Villa’s favor as it means that their star man could be missing for fewer games.
Kodjia’s return from AFCON is entirely dependent upon the Ivory Coast’s final group game this evening against Morocco, 7pm kick-off. If the Elephants, who have drawn their first two matches, fail to win the game, they will be out of the competition and Kodjia will be back in Birmingham very shortly.
However, should they win, Villa will have to make do without their star man for a little while longer. The worst case scenario would be if the Ivory Coast were to win their potential quarter-final on January 29th – this would see him miss a further two games, even if they were to lose their semi-final match (he would still have to stay for the third place play-off).
Therefore, a quarter-final win would ensure that he will not be available to play for Villa until the home game against Ipswich on the 11th February. Villa have struggled without Kodjia leading the attack and, as a result, mostVilla fans will be hoping that the Ivory Coast are eliminated tonight.
