Villa win mini-tournament in Germany

Aston Villa won the Cup of Traditions after beating Hertha Berlin in the final at the MSV Arena.

Goals from new recruit Christopher Samba and Gabby Agbonlahor gave Villa a comfortable 2-0 win, after they had completed a 3-0 rout over Duisburg earlier in the day.

Scott Hogan scored a brace in that match, while Green chipped in with the other, but Steve Bruce decided to shuffle his team completely for the final, with Jed Steer being the only player who played the whole 90 minutes.

Glenn Whelan played in a Villa shirt for the first time and looked composed and relaxed on the ball, while Jack Grealish returned to action after a long break. In the earlier match, new signing Ahmed Elmohamady put in a promising display that will have pleased all the Villa fans watching.

After two disappointing performances against Walsall and Shrewsbury, the Villa players gave 90 minutes of inspired football in Germany, and now head into their final pre-season game against Watford next weekend with some renewed hope.
