Villa were unable to block Kodjia’s international call-up

Championship side Aston Villa say they were “powerless” in preventing striker Jonathan Kodjia from joining up with the Ivory Coast national team, where he picked up an injury during training, according to a report on the Express and Star.

The forward has managed to find the back of the net once this season.

Kodjia suffered a serious ankle injury earlier in the calendar year but following recovery, he hurt his ankle once more last month during the Midlands derby against Birmingham City which meant he had to be substituted.

The striker was recovering once again and was called up to the Ivory Coast squad, where he made the injury worse and Villa manager Steve Bruce is hugely frustrated with the news.

The 28-year-old could not be stopped from reporting to international duty because of international regulations. He was also passed fit by the Ivory Coast team doctor but now Villa are considering seeking compensation following the injury.

Kodjia is now set to see a specialist doctor regarding his ankle and Bruce fears that the striker may be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

We have had the doctor from Ivory Coast ring us on the Wednesday to say he was going to train, he was 100 per cent OK. They were fully confident.

Unfortunately he has broken down in the training session. Whether he has been tackled or not, or gone over on it, I am not sure.

Kodjia struck 19 times for Villa in the Championship last season and will be a big miss for the side as they push for promotion to the Premier League.
