Dean Smith could make James Collins his first Villa signing

Former West Ham defender and current free agent James Collins could become Dean Smith’s first signing after taking over at Aston Villa.

The Birmingham Mail report that Smith will consider a deal to sign the experienced Welsh defender, who has spent time on trial at both Villa and Ipswich already this season.

Collins was close joining Villa while Steve Bruce was in charge of the club, but the report claims that he could now be handed a lifeline by Smith.

The former West Ham man will be given the chance to prove himself to Smith as he continues to train with the club.

The new Aston Villa boss is keen to strengthen in defence and Collins could be the man to help them do just that.

Collins left West Ham at the end of last season and is yet to commit to a new club following a string of injury problems.
