Villa defender will retire at the end of the season

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Aston Villa defender Micah Richards will retire from football when his contract runs out in the summer.

The 30-year-old former England international has suffered with injuries throughout his career, but in the last few years he has struggled to overcome a long-term knee issue and he has now supposedly told his family and closest friends that he plans to call it a day when his Villa contract expires in June.

Richards hasn’t played for Villa in over two years, and during his lengthy spell on the sidelines he has been picking up a crisp 200k a month.

If he had any integrity or self-respect, he would tear up his contract (like James Collins did when he picked up an injury) and leave the club now. However, it seems like he is content with receiving one final £1 million from Aston Villa.

When his contract expires, Richards would have played 26 games for Villa in 4 years, meaning that he cost the club around 370k per appearance.

Nice to know that Villa have been funding his pension pot!
