Villa might still make a move for former defender

According to a report in the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa might consider making a late move to sign Gary Cahill from Chelsea if he doesn’t find a Premier League team by Thursday evening.

The 33-year-old centre-back, who has been capped 61 times by England, came through the Villa youth system and went on to make 28 appearances for the senior side, before leaving for Bolton Wanderers in 2008. He joined Chelsea in 2012 and has since won everything there is to win at club level.

However, due to his age and the wealth of options that Chelsea possess, he is struggling for game time under Maurizio Sarri – he has played just 21 minutes of Premier League football this season.

Villa have been thinking about trying to tempt him back for a while now, but they eventually ruled out a move due to his high wage demands.

However, funds have now been freed up by sending Yannick Bolasie back to Everton, Andre Moreira back to Atletico Madrid, while Scott Hogan is due to complete a loan move to Sheffield United.

Therefore, Villa should now be able to afford a short loan move for the former England international, but they will have to wait and see whether he finds a Premier League club over the next couple of days.
